Two explosions on August 12 were detected by Russian acoustics as well. Location of the Kursk on the moment of the first explosion was known precisely. It is there that the deep-sea vessels Mirs discovered fragments of the torpedo, remnants of the torpedo tube, and other fragments. All of that indicates that a practice torpedo blew up in the submarine.

A piece of the hull was torn out and the submarine began taking water. Fire was reported in the compartment. Just over two minutes later explosives in live torpedoes detonated. Explosions were logged at 1130 hours on August 12. Search for the submarine began twelve hours later.

The source says that submarine Commander Lyachin knew there was something wrong with the practice torpedo.
