WHAT HYPOTHESIS WILL BE CONFIRMED?
Viktor Baranets, Komsomolskaya Pravda, February 10, 2001, p. 6
SUMMARY:

Ilya Klebanov, Deputy Premier and Chairman of the Investigation Commission, claims that specialists are investigating three hypotheses - collision with an unidentified vessel, collision with a floating mine, a relic of World War II, and an emergency in the torpedo compartment.

It seems that the third hypothesis is drifting into the foreground. Experts are split on what blew up in the compartment - a torpedo or an ASW missile.
