A SHARP TURN
Andrei Novikov, Literaturnaya Gazeta, February 28, 2001, p. 5
SUMMARY:
The Kursk with all trimmings including torpedoes, missiles, computers, and cutlery costs almost $1 billion. About $0.5 billion are needed to lift it from the seabed. This time Klebanov surmises that something must have happened in the torpedo compartment. Only recently the collision hypothesis was all we heard from official sources. Russia is out to salvage its national pride, not the Kursk. It cannot have the national military-industrial complex blamed for the catastrophe. Hence all the confusing statements. As a cynic Russian, I do not believe the state will spend $0.5 billion only to lift a dead submarine from the seabed. All rights reserved.
