THE KURSK: THERE ARE MISSILES THERE BUT THEY ARE NOT DANGEROUS
Yekaterina Maksimova, Moskovskaya Pravda, April 12, 2001

Grigori Tomchin, Duma deputy sitting on the governmental commission, denies reports of nuclear weapons allegedly carried by the nuclear submarine Kursk.

Tomchin: Submarines of this type carry delivery means indeed, but the Kursk did not carry nuclear warheads. There are 22 guided missiles there but they do not pose any threat to environment or anything.

The commission has not answered the question of what caused the tragedy. Everybody agrees that the Kursk has to be lifted before the answer will be given.

Submarines were lifted from the seabed in the past, but they weighed 3-4 thousand tons only. The Kursk weighs 18,000 tons.
