ILYA KLEBANOV: THE CAUSE OF THE KURSK DISASTER HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED
Russian Radio, Vesti, August 10, 2001, 11:00

Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov, who heads the government commission for investigating the cause of the Kursk submarine sinking, told Interfax that the cause of the Kursk disaster in the Barents Sea has not been determined.

At the same time, Klebanov noted that there are three theories regarding the sinking. According to the first, the submarine sank as a result of a collision with a mine.

According to the second theory, the Kursk collided with an underwater object, possibly a foreign submarine. The third theory involves the explosion of a torpedo in the sub's front compartment.
