TEST DIVING TO FRAGMENTS OF THE FIRST COMPARTMENT OF THE NPS KURSK
ORT, Novosti, May 31, 2002, 12:00

On May 31, a ship-raising team started lowering underwater vehicles from the decks of Mikhail Rudnitsky and Altai ships in the Barents Sea. The specialists finished adjusting the equipment on previous night. Now it is twenty-four hour polar day in the Barents Sea and therefore the work has been done round the clock.

An RTM-500 TV-device was the first to be taken underwater, followed by a mini-submarine with a crew of four people. Their task is to visualize fragments of the first compartment which is to be raised. Quite possibly, one of them will be raised to the surface on May 31 already. Automatic devices will carry out the entire operation without participation of divers.

The weather in this part of the sea is good, the wind's speed reaches 5 meters per second, sea roughness is small, up to 2 force. Weather forecasters promise such weather in the next few days as well.
